Artaud’s mother had nine
children, however only he and one sister survived childhood.
When Artaud was only four
years old, he was diagnosed with a severe case of meningitis; this gave him
a nervous temperament during his adolescent years. He also suffered from neuralgia and he was
treated using opium, which eventually resulted in a lifelong addiction.
